| The MVS is funded entirely by its membership and voluntary contributions with no direct assistance from the public purse. The perennial challenge is to keep membership subscriptions low to attract recruits whilst purchasing and operating our expensive training craft assets.
Whilst we keep our operating costs to a minimum because our skilled volunteers carry out almost all our maintenance tasks, but specialist contractors are occasionally required and we cannot avoid the cost of spares, fuel, insurance or berthing costs.
To illustrate our funding needs, it costs about £30K per annum to administer the Service using unpaid volunteers where the major expenses are in insurance, essential travel, monthly management meetings and support. It costs about £5K per annum to operate a RIB or launch and about £25K per annum to operate a 24 metre training ship.
